Aqua Drones to Rescue Urban Waterways

There is new hope for Colombo’s urban waterways thanks to the high-tech drones which could reduce the cost of cleaning them up by as much as 90 per cent.

Kayal, a unique start-up in Sri Lanka, proposes a new solution to battle pollution in urban waterways. It proposes using Aqua Drones to fish out waste and also collect data about waterways with the aid of computer vision and remote sensing.

Centuries ago, the Dutch built the island’s urban canal system, which was later modified by the British. The waterways that have become an eyesore today zigzagged across the island, following natural contours and facilitating trading activities all over the country during their heyday.…
